In Writing Unbound, Tom Newkirk argues that as a teaching profession, we shoot ourselves in the foot when it comes to writing. We fail to take advantage of a huge opportunity that is before us. That opportunity is fiction writing.

This book contains four essays written over 28 years ago while I was teaching writing and literature in the secondary school classroom. I do not wish to make apologies for the unpolished prose style of the essays or for arguments I once would have avidly defended, but today no longer stir a whole lot of zeal in me. Hopefully, a new generation of English teachers will find a few of the ideas contained in the essays of some value today.

In his first nine years as a teacher, Brendan Halpin goes from wide-eyed idealist to cynical, heartbroken idealist. Unique among teaching memoirs, Losing My Faculties is not the story of a heroic teacher who transforms the lives of his hardbitten students; rather, it's the inspirational and often unpretty truth about people who choose to get up ridiculously early day after day and year after year to go stand in front of teenagers.

William Shakespeare's classic masterpiece, the tragedy of Othello, Moor of Venice, joined in an interracial marriage to the beautiful Desdemona and driven to suspicion and jealousy by his maleficent officer Iago.

A mosaic of teen chaos, confusion and sexual anarchy is the backdrop for suburban ninth-grader Alison Gepner's search for meaning and first love. A "good girl" who would rather be seen as an edgy individualist, Alison is surrounded by the soldiers of a cruel and crushing teen culture.

Adapted from Erin Gruwell's successful Freedom Writers Program, Writers Matter develops students' skills in the context of personal growth, understanding others, and making broader connections to the world.

I type "International Teaching Jobs" on the Google search line and find several sites, but I decide on one particularly useful site for which I pay a slight fee, and I find myself looking at a long list of teaching jobs all over the world. "Anything in Latin America," my wife asks, coming in to the room. "No, but here's one in the Congo." "Africa!?" "Yea, really. They want a calculus teacher! I can do that!" "Okay," Chantal says tentatively. "If you want." I hit the submit button and my resume is off across the world.
