Rueben's life couldn't get any worse. The villain he's facing off against seems to know Rueben better than he knows himself. Buzz, Rueben's genius sidekick, has a plan. But it means that Rueben can't use his abilities to get the job done. He has to get it right the first-time round. No dying this time. As the battle rages on, Rueben and his friends are beginning to realize more is at stake than first thought. It's not just this Earth that's in trouble. All the Earths in all of existence are about to crumble. If Rueben can't stop this maniac in time, all human life will be wiped out.

Thousands of years ago, the city of Athanor was set adrift in time and space by alchemists, called "the Curious Men". Ever since, it has accumulated cultures, citizens, and species into a vast, unmappable metropolis. Isten and her gang of half-starved political exiles live off petty crime and gangland warfare in Athanor's seediest alleys. Though they dream of returning home to lead a glorious revolution, Isten's downward spiral drags them into a mire of addiction and violence. Isten must find a way to save the exiles and herself.

Still recovering from a recent institutionalization and unable to trust his own mind or magic, Adrien is drawn into the witch hunt as suspicion falls upon those closest to him. The city's inquisitors and witchfinders are losing control, the magicians are growing more and more resentful, and the scars from Adrien's last brush with disaster refuse to fade. To put an end to the innocent deaths, to keep his dearest friends, and to prove himself worthy of a potential new romance, Adrien is forced to confront his own blind spots before he's fatally ensnared by the angel of death's machinations.
