When many Christians think about the second coming of Jesus, they imagine apocalyptic disaster, fear and terror, and world-collapse. But what if the second coming was more like a wedding than a catastrophe? If Jesus is returning as the bridegroom, shouldn’t his bride - the Church - focus more on deepening their commitment to him than on comparing global events to last-days timelines?

Athanasius of Alexandria was a bishop in fourth-century Egypt. Thanks in part to Athanasius’ arguments, his position of Trinitarianism (that the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost were all One God) became the official position of Christendom, and remains so to this day. This work, On the Incarnation (or sometimes On the Incarnation of the Word of God), was his first book. It tackles the central point of the divine saga, God’s embodiment on Earth as Christ, and seeks to understand, in detail, the “why” and “how” of it all.

The question I address in this brief work is how Christ-followers might hold the tension of these two abiding and complementary truths: 1. Christ’s one-of-a-kind revelation 2. Abba’s all-inclusive love. I believe that Sacred Scripture and Christ himself affirm both these doctrines in a mind-blowing fullness. And yet those who enthusiastically profess either one of these two truths frequently do so at the expense of their complement.
