What do we mean when we use the word soul? What are the essential qualities of the soul, seldom explored in systems of faith? What happens when I allow my soul to work its own brand of magic in my life? In The Subversive Soul: the Gentle Revolution Everyone Needs, Phyllis Mathis liberates the soul from of the confines of theology, and plants it deep within the lived experience of regular human beings.

Deeply influenced by his grandmother's faith and immersed in the fervent spirituality of his church—from fiery sermons to prayers spoken in tongues—author Scot Loyd once believed without question. But as he grew older, that belief began to shift. Confronted by the heavy demands of his religion, the racism that harmed his closest friend, and personal wounds too long ignored, he began to question the version of faith he had been given. The God I Was Given is the story of letting go and searching for something more—a faith that is wider, more honest, and rooted in love.

In western post-Christian society, humans are thought of less like precious image bearers and more like commodities. The canary in the coal mine of this ideological shift is often women and children, which manifests itself in the seemingly built-in disdain towards motherhood and children for their lack of production of economically valuable goods. However, the risk of this utilitarian approach to human life is not just outside the church, but within those spaces as well.

For nearly 2000 years, virtually every Christian woman wore a headcovering during worship. Today, the practice has nearly disappeared. What happened? Dale Partridge walks Christians verse by verse through 1 Corinthians 11: 2-16 to help them understand the doctrine of headcoverings and how these biblical symbols visually preserve God’s design for men and women. But more than that, he demonstrates that when these visual symbols are eliminated from the church, society's definitions of men and women are forgotten.
