Caterina dettò il "Dialogo della Divina Provvidenza" in volgare ai suoi discepoli Neri Pagliaresi, Stefano Maconi e Barduccio Canigiani nell'autunno del 1378, terminando l'opera il 13 ottobre. Il "Dialogo" è il testamento spirituale di Caterina da Siena, e al di là del tesoro di insegnamenti che contiene, viene anche considerato un capolavoro della letteratura italiana dell'epoca.

Sainte Thérèse a fait dans ce livre un effort systématique - le premier dans l'histoire de la pensée et de la littérature - pour déverser en ces pages la totalité de sa personne, en sorte que les critiques littéraires le considèrent comme le livre le plus personnel de toute la littérature espagnole.
