St. Alphonsus Liguori (1696 - 1787) was an Italian bishop famous for his moral teaching. He was born in Naples to a noble family who directed his life into law. After earning his degree, he led a very successful law practice until at the age of 27 he gave it up to become a priest. He was ordained at the age of 30, and then became a minister to the poor, founding a number of "evening chapels".

For over 50 years, Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr., a Baptist minister, activist, and organizer, has worked for civil rights, peace, and the promise of true democracy. In the tumultuous days of the Reformation, the centerpiece of Luther’s ministry was his bold biblical preaching. Martin Luther, the reformer, theologian, author and polemicist is well known as hymn-writer, musician, teacher, and pastor to both clergy and laity. However, Luther saw himself as a preacher first. On religious holidays, he preached twice a day. The sermon "Day of St. John the Evangelist" is based on John 21:19-24, about Christ’s imminent death. At that time, Jesus reprimanded Peter for doing everything but that which he was supposed to do.

Charles Finney (1792-1875) was a Presbyterian preacher known for his revival services and extemporaneous preaching. He also dealt with social issues and was an abolitionist. In 1835, Finney was appointed as a professor of theology at Oberlin College; he became its president in 1851. Sermons on Gospel Themes is a collection of his sermons, including 24 delivered at Oberlin College between 1844 and 1861. They were taken down in shorthand while Finney preached them, and submitted to him for correction or addition.
