The most highly decorated German regimental commander of World War II, Hyazinth Graf Strachwitz first won the Iron Cross in the Great War. The German Army lost two consecutive wars and the conclusion is often drawn that it simply wasn't able to cope with its opponents. But by 1944 it had a leadership that was able to wield it with lethal effect and with far more effective equipment than before.
