The most highly decorated German regimental commander of World War II, Hyazinth Graf Strachwitz first won the Iron Cross in the Great War. He was serving with the 1st Panzer Division when the Polish campaign inaugurated World War II. Strachwitz's exploits as commander of a panzer battalion during the French campaign earned him further decorations before he transferred to the newly formed 16th Panzer Division. The German Army lost two consecutive wars and the conclusion is often drawn that it simply wasn't able to cope with its opponents. But by 1944 it had a leadership that was able to wield it with lethal effect and with far more effective equipment than before. Hitler became increasingly unwilling to delegate decision-making to commanders in the field, which had been crucial to earlier success.
