Grunge wasn’t a genre. It was a condition. Before flannel became fashion. Before MTV turned sadness into style. Before Nirvana knocked Michael Jackson off the charts. There was rain. There was cheap rent. There were broken amplifiers in basement clubs no one outside Seattle cared about. In Grunge: The Sound That Crawled Out of the Rain, Kevin L. Whitworth delivers a powerful investigative cultural history of the Seattle music scene that changed the 1990s—and then collapsed under its own success. This is not another Nirvana biography. This is not a nostalgia trip.

In this interconnected series, Kevin L. Whitworth traces the hidden lives of these iconic stringed instruments, following their paths from workshops and front porches to battlefields, concert halls, and cultural crossroads. Blending investigative history with lyrical storytelling, these books uncover forgotten inventors, misunderstood musicians, and the quiet revolutions that shaped the sound of American music.

Servanthood of Song is a history of American church music from the colonial era to the present. Its focus is on the institutional and societal pressures that have shaped church song and have led us directly to where we are today. The gulf which separates advocates of traditional and contemporary worship—Black and White, Protestant and Catholic—is not new. History repeatedly shows us that ministry, to be effective, must meet the needs of the entire worshiping community, not just one segment, age group, or class.

An avant-garde pop album rich with tension and fear, 1980’s Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps) marked a pivotal point in David Bowie’s career. Standing at the bleeding edge of the new decade between the experimental Berlin Trilogy (Low, Heroes, and Lodger) and 1983’s wildly successful...

Everybody argues about the GOAT. Almost nobody agrees on why. Is greatness about bars? Sales? Cultural impact? Longevity? Innovation? Business power? Or just who you grew up listening to? Who's the GOAT? breaks the debate down with structure instead of nostalgia. Written from the perspective of a philosopher and student of hip-hop, this book traces the evolution of the MC from the Bronx in the 1970s to the global dominance of rap today.
