Ya hemos dicho que nos hemos visto obligados a distinguir dos colecciones de este periodo por la gran cantidad de obras producidas y el número de nuevos estilos puestos en marcha. Sólo hemos pretendido mencionar los más impactantes y mostrar los autores y las obras más conocidas y admiradas de nuestro siglo.

Todavía nos ha parecido necesario añadir esta tercera serie de los estilos y obras más originales de los últimos decenios que pueden resultar más familiares para todos los que hemos vivido entre ellos.

Una sensibilidad y una cultura tan explosiva y sorprendente como la de este siglo produce un arte semejante, que pretende fundir todos los hallazgos anteriores de un modo demasiado controvertido. Pese a todos sus descubrimientos particulares, el arte del XIX no consigue un sello de calidad como los siglos anteriores (Renacimiento y Barroco, por ejemplo), sino que mezcla todos sus descubrimientos para hacer brotar diversos estilos poco convincentes.

Nuestra Península es tan rica en manifestaciones artísticas prehistóricas que, precisamente, su abundancia ha tenido sumidos en el mayor desconcierto, durante mucho tiempo, a historiadores y arqueólogos, impidiéndoles establecer un esquema de conjunto en el que quedasen satisfactoriamente encuadradas y correlacionadas esas variadísimas manifestaciones.

Es curioso comprobar que si bien la arquitectura románica se desarrolla con anterioridad en la región pirenaica, la escultura toma, en cambio, la ventaja en Galicia y León desde el siglo XI. Cierto es, sin embargo, que los más antiguos dinteles y capiteles fechados parecen ser pirenaicos, pero la gran actividad de los escultores pirenaicos no culmina hasta el siglo XII, cuando ya gallegos, castellanos y leoneses habían llenado sus iglesias de hermosos relieves de piedra.

A finales del XIX, el francés Monet con su cuadro "Soleil levant, Impresión" abre la puerta a un nuevo estilo que va a dominar Europa durante más de medio siglo. En esta primera exposición impresionista (1874) acompañan a Manet otros autores que van a dirigir este estilo, como Renoir o Degas. Esta nueva corriente pictórica pretende reproducir la apariencia meramente transitoria de los objetos destacada por la luz y los reflejos de los cuerpos en el mismo momento en que son contemplados.

No sólo en Italia comienzan a oírse las trompetas de la revolución socioeconómica que va a transformar Europa. Flandes siente también esta conmoción histórica que se avecina y da a luz un arte tan vanguardista y sorprendente como el italiano, como podemos ver en esta breve colección. Las diferencias con el arte italiano son evidentes, pero también lo son con el arte europeo anterior. En Flandes se está fraguando una revolución artística semejante a la italiana.

Esta tercera etapa histórica del espíritu heleno es la de su decadencia final pero no por ello debemos prestarle menos atención que a las dos anteriores, porque sigue poseyendo una gran madurez creadora de la que se han alimentado todos los grandes estilos europeos de Roma y el Renacimiento europeo, como se verá en posteriores colecciones.

Como resultado directo de la conquista de la Península Ibérica por las legiones romanas, la romanización se inicia desde el primer momento, se acentúa durante el Imperio, o sea, desde el año 19 a. de J.C. en adelante, y se completa, por influjo del Cristianismo, en los siglos III y IV de nuestra Era.

Aunque no podemos mostrar la complejidad del arte de esta zona oriental, hemos mostrado esta breve colección de sus mejores producciones poniendo de relieve la influencia que han tenido, no sólo con el arte hindú sino incluso con el occidental, sobre todo a partir del siglo XX, en que los contactos económicos entre estas zonas fueron cada vez más intensos.

El neolítico no surgió espontáneamente en España. La invención de la agricultura y la ganadería la trajeron unos navegantes que llegaron a España hacia el 4.500 ó 4.000 a J.C. Los pueblos que se habían establecido más al interior tardaron bastante tiempo en dominar las técnicas agrícolas y vivieron siglos en un arcaizante mesolítico de caza y recolección.

El carácter artesano de todas las realizaciones plásticas del románico determina que estas obras -esmaltes, marfiles, orfebrería, etc.- tuviesen un valor y una estimación que en nada desmerecía de la que poseían la pintura, escultura o el edificio mismo. Cuando los reyes querían hacer una donación a una iglesia o monasterio era frecuente que consistiese en estas piezas, entonces altamente estimadas y que hoy, por un prurito de jerarquía y clasificación, se han denominado "Artes menores, o "Artes industriales".

In Art as Information Ecology, Jason A. Hoelscher offers not only an information theory of art but an aesthetic theory of information. Applying close readings of the information theories of Claude Shannon and Gilbert Simondon to 1960s American art, Hoelscher proposes that art is information in its aesthetic or indeterminate mode—information oriented less toward answers and resolvability than toward questions, irresolvability, and sustained difference. The central argument of Chromophobia is that a chromophobic impulse—a fear of corruption or contamination through color—lurks within much Western cultural and intellectual thought. This is apparent in the many and varied attempts to purge color, either by making it the property of some foreign body—the oriental, the feminine, the infantile, the vulgar, or the pathological—or by relegating it to the realm of the superficial, the supplementary, the inessential, or the cosmetic.
