Desde los últimos años del siglo XV, la España de los Reyes Católicos conoce el resurgir de la vitalidad nacional. La victoria política deja también su impronta en lo cultural. Se abren las puertas a todo lo que signifique influjo exterior para asimilarlo, pero sin olvidar lo propiamente hispánico.

Nació en Fuente de Cantos, provincia de Badajoz, allá por el año 1598, a muy corto espacio de tiempo de otros "intocables", como Ribera o Velázquez, que nacen también al filo del 1600. Esta fecha es una de las más notables forjadoras de artistas, no sólo en España, sino también en el extranjero. Nombres como Rembrandt, Vermeer, Poussin, etc, aparecen en el mundo por las mismas fechas, es decir, son hombres de la misma generación. La generación de 1600 es una de las primeras generaciones de la Europa moderna, que es casi como decir de la Europa barroca.

El término Renacimiento es demasiado amplio -y no poco confuso- a la hora de precisar los límites del fenómeno pictórico. Para unos el Renacimiento es una continuación del arte gótico; para otros es, sin embargo, una reacción contra él; unas veces se habla de Renacimiento con un sentido temporal (siglos XIV a XVI), otras prefiere entenderse como norma "espacial" (Italia y Flandes). Estas distintas interpretaciones, que conviven y alientan en el complejo vocablo, nos anuncian la única cualidad clara y distinta del Renacimiento: su falta de claridad.

En la Historia del Arte Español, como en la de cualquier país, lo más difícil, y para muchos lo más fácil, es recoger una serie de nombres, estilos, figuras, etc. que estudiar. Difícil porque no se sabe quienes son los mejores, ya que hablando de estilos artísticos es muy complicado llegar a determinar cuál es la belleza por excelencia, cuando ésta es algo subjetivo de cada espectador que la contempla y teniendo en cuenta que entran en litigio muchos elementos -y no todos objetivos ni igualmente valorables- que hacen recaer una mayor responsabilidad al efectuar esa valoración.

La gran polémica de nuestro tiempo es la tensión entre figurativismo y no figurativismo pictórico. Está claro que se trata de una polémica profana en la que no entran los entendidos ni los buenos aficionados. Pero la voz de la calle, la famosa "vox populi" es un síntoma muy digno de tomarse en cuenta, no tanto por lo que dice como por la conciencia colectiva que representa.

Se ha dicho muchas veces, y con razón, que hay más diferencia entre el arte románico y el gótico que entre el gótico y el renacentista. El paso del arte románico al gótico supone una crisis radical del pensamiento europeo, mientras que el Renacimiento sólo era una continuación (si se quiere, una exageración) del pensamiento bajomedieval. Por fuerza, hemos de distinguir, pues, entre el arte románico como expresión plástica de unos conceptos teológicos indiscutibles y el arte gótico como expresión de una época de duda y de escarceos racionalistas.

Después de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, a medida que iban envejeciendo y desapareciendo los grandes maestros de la llamada Escuela de París, una oleada de jóvenes pintores se aprestaba a sucederles. Gracias a ellos, la pintura española sigue gozando de un puesto de honor en el arte universal, como se verá en este tema.

La escultura románica, que es, como la pintura, un producto anticlásico, tiene en principio, un valor funcional. Los "Libri Carolini", redactados en tiempos y por orden de Carlomagno, asignan a las imágenes de los templos dos finalidades concretas:1)-Deben utilizarse para que sirvan de adorno, y en consecuencia no debe atribuírseles ningún valor de santidad.2)-Deben servir para mantener el recuerdo de los acontecimientos sagrados y de los hombres santos.

El siglo XVIII es un período estéril de la pintura española, salvo la gran figura de Goya, el "monstruo", que va a llenar con su obra genial un gran vacío de cien años. Este hecho, repetido y confirmado por cien autores diferentes, es un poco extraño y hubiera debido despertar la curiosidad de los investigadores en búsqueda de las razones que lo hicieron posible.

Los últimos años del siglo XIX y los primeros del XX no dejaban adivinar con facilidad cuál iba a ser la evolución inmediata de la escultura española, a causa de la carencia total de un orden estético y de la proliferación de monumentos conmemorativos de un extremado detallismo, pero faltos de inventiva y valía artística. Pero muy pronto, a medida que se iba penetrando en el siglo XX, la escultura volvió a recuperar su antigua consideración.

A continuación de la escultura románica, que, plena de simbolismo y alejada de todo cuanto viniera a suponer relación con la realidad, se había extendido hasta las décadas finales del siglo XII, se abre una nueva concepción de las artes plásticas, en la que el carácter fundamental es el realismo naturalista. Lentamente van desapareciendo los tipos estilizados del románico para ser sustituidos por otros directamente inspirados en la Naturaleza.

La vida de Murillo resulta menos conocida que la de otros maestros de la época. Sabemos que queda huérfano a muy temprana edad (catorce años) y que entra en el taller de Juan del Castillo, como Zurbarán había hecho en el de Villanueva y Velázquez en el de Pacheco. Los tres pintores superaron ampliamente a sus maestros, de donde cabe deducir que la experiencia sólo puede servir de muleta al genio, tanto en éste como en cualquier orden de cosas.

Es curioso comprobar que si bien la arquitectura románica se desarrolla con anterioridad en la región pirenaica, la escultura toma, en cambio, la ventaja en Galicia y León desde el siglo XI. Cierto es, sin embargo, que los más antiguos dinteles y capiteles fechados parecen ser pirenaicos, pero la gran actividad de los escultores pirenaicos no culmina hasta el siglo XII, cuando ya gallegos, castellanos y leoneses habían llenado sus iglesias de hermosos relieves de piedra.
