De très beaux textes où le réalisme côtoie le grotesque, le fantastique ou l'absurde et ne fait pas obstacle à un foisonnement imaginaire souvent débridé. Gogol, à travers ces "petites histoires", nous donne à découvrir sa vision de la société russe du XIXe siècle, une "peinture au scalpel" pleine d'ironie et souvent drôle.

"Le Journal d'un fou" est avant tout une histoire russe, où le héros est à la fois furieux, infiniment triste, et tendre.

Nicolas Gogol (1809 - 1852) est l'un des écrivains les plus marquants de la littérature russe. Considéré comme l'inventeur du genre fantastique, il publie en 1835 un recueil de nouvelles "Mirgorod" dont est extrait "Le journal d'un fou". Ce récit, mêlant comique et tragédie, conte à la première personne la montée de la folie d'un petit fonctionnaire qui, pour s'évader d'un monde décevant, en imagine un autre, plus conforme à ses rêves. Mais, parviendra-t-il à garder le contrôle de son imagination ?

Préoccupé depuis son plus jeune âge par les rapports hiérarchiques qui maintiennent les hommes dans l'état de servitude, Tolstoï montre à travers ce récit combien il est difficile de s'extraire des relations de domination, qui sont elles-mêmes le fruit de la cupidité et de la crainte de l'autre. Seule la peur de la mort permet au maître et à son serviteur de se départir des conformismes pour atteindre un niveau de conscience supérieur, moral et absolu.

Ce court texte raconte la découverte que fit un jour le barbier Ivan Iakovlievitch dans le pain qu'il s'apprêtait à croquer un matin : un nez. Il cherche à s'en débarrasser, en vain. La police finit par arrêter cet homme qui tente désespérément de se séparer d'un nez. De son côté Kovaliov, assesseur au collège a perdu son nez, il ne reste plus qu'à le lui rendre. Mais le nez semble refuser de retrouver sa place sur la figure de Kovaliov et préfère mener sa propre existence. À travers un récit totalement fantastique et absurde, Gogol dépeint ici des hommes face à leurs angoisses et leurs relations qui ne sont qu'un semblant de raison masquant la folie.

Ce court roman raconte le voyage entrepris par quatre personnages à travers la steppe. Iégorouchka, qui a dix ans, est envoyé au lycée, et son oncle, Kousmitchov, qui doit également traverser ces paysages arides à la recherche d'un homme riche avec qui il fait affaire, accompagne son neveu. La nature impressionnante et les rencontres de fortune dessinent un chemin vers le lycée à la fois violent et touchant, comme Tchékhov décrit souvent l'humanité elle-même.

"Le manteau" appartient au recueil des "Nouvelles de Pétersbourg", publié en 1843. Ce court texte raconte l'existence simple, limitée, mais heureuse d'un petit fonctionnaire russe, Akaki Akakiévitch Bachmatchkine. Lorsque ses collègues lui font remarquer l'usure de son manteau, pour la première fois, Akaki est sensible aux critiques mesquines et quotidiennes de son entourage, et il se met en tête d'économiser sou après sou pour s'offrir un nouvel habit. Quand il l'acquiert enfin, il est agressé, et son manteau volé.
