This enigmatic poem is attributed to Seng-t'san, the third Chinese patriarch of Zen, who died in 606 CE. The tone of the work is revealed in the opening stanza in which the patriarch recommends dynamic introspection as the ideal attitude in solving the apparent problems of life. He urges the seeker neither to become trapped in the "outer entanglements of life" nor to isolate himself in solitude, but to remain calm in the procession of personal vicissitudes, seeing the essential oneness of all things.

Im Ameishaufen wimmelt es,

Der Aff' frisst nie Verschimmeltes.

Die Biene ist ein fleißig Tier,

Dem Bären kommt dies g'spaßig für.

Die Ceder ist ein hoher Baum,

Oft schmeckt man die Citrone kaum

Das wilde Dromedar man koppelt,

Die Knopp-Trilogie ist nach "Max und Moritz“ eines der bekanntesten Werke von Wilhelm Busch. Der Zweizeiler "Vater werden ist nicht schwer - Vater sein dagegen sehr“ stammt aus dieser Trilogie.

Erstmals ist hier der Bürger nicht Opfer handlungsstarker Plagegeister, wie es in "Max und Moritz“ oder "Hans Huckebein, der Unglücksrabe“ der Fall war, sondern durchgängig die handelnde Hauptperson.

Pegasus, du alter Renner,

Trag mich mal nach Afrika,

Alldieweil so schwarze Männer

Und so bunte Vögel da.

Kleider sind da wenig Sitte;

Höchstens trägt man einen Hut,

Auch wohl einen Schurz der Mitte;

Man ist schwarz und damit gut.

Vater werden ist nicht schwer,

Vater sein dagegen sehr.

Ersteres wird gern geübt,

Weil es allgemein beliebt.

Selbst der Lasterhafte zeigt,

Dass er gar nicht abgeneigt;

Nur will er mit seinen Sünden

Keinen guten Zweck verbinden,

Sondern, wenn die Kosten kommen,

Fühlet er sich angstbeklommen.

Eine Pfeife in dem Munde,

Unterm Arm zwei junge Hunde

Trug der alte Kaspar Schlich. –

Rauchen kann er fürchterlich.

Doch, obschon die Pfeife glüht,

Oh, wie kalt ist sein Gemüt! –

»Wozu« - lauten seine Worte –

»Wozu nützt mir diese Sorte?

Macht sie mir vielleicht Pläsier?

Einfach nein! erwidr' ich mir.

Wenn mir aber was nicht lieb,

Weg damit! ist mein Prinzip.«

An dem Teiche steht er still,

Weil er sie ertränken will.

Sokrates, der alte Greis,

Sagte oft in tiefen Sorgen:

„Ach, wie viel ist doch verborgen,

Was man immer noch nicht weiß.“

Und so ist es. – Doch indessen

Darf man eines nicht vergessen:

Eines weiß man doch hienieden,

Nämlich, wenn man unzufrieden.

Hier sieht man Fritz, den muntren Knaben,

Nebst Huckebein, dem jungen Raben.

Und dieser Fritz, wie alle Knaben,

Will einen Raben gerne haben.

Schon rutscht er auf dem Ast daher,

Der Vogel, der misstraut ihm sehr.
