Paul Valéry est né à Sète le 30 octobre 1871 ; il est mort à Paris le 19 juillet 1945. Essayiste et poète, il est aussi exceptionnel ici que là. C'est un écrivain qui méprise les prestiges faciles de la littérature : l'inconscience bavarde et la satisfaction de parler de soi. Poète, Valéry l'est comme rarement on le fut : froidement. Un poème est pour lui une savante machine verbale plutôt destinée à provoquer une émotion qu'à exposer celle de l'auteur.

Charles Baudelaire est né le 9 avril 1821 à Paris ; il y mourut le 31 août 1867, emporté par une atroce maladie, avant même d'atteindre à sa cinquantième année. Mais à ce corps misérable survécut un génie qui continue d'illuminer la poésie d'une sombre lumière. Avec Baudelaire finit le romantisme, et ce "frisson nouveau" qu'il apporta avec lui et dont Victor Hugo le félicitait, inaugure la poésie moderne.

Né en 1432 et mort à une date incertaine, après 1463, François Villon est le poète du Moyen Âge finissant. Tout en continuant à se servir des formes poétiques traditionnelles, il inaugure une nouvelle attitude en poésie, inspirée à la fois par un esprit populaire et par le malheur et l'ironie d'une conscience individuelle. Dans le "Lais" et le "Testament", Villon nous fait ainsi une confidence intime et réaliste ; il nous parle de lui et chante sa propre destinée, comme aucun poète ne l'avait encore fait ; il donne aux gens du menu peuple le prestige des héros d'une "Chanson de Geste".

Gérard Labrunie dit Gérard de Nerval, est né le 22 mai 1808, à Paris. Il décida d'y terminer volontairement ses jours et on le retrouva pendu, rue de la Vieille Lanterne, à l'aube du 26 janvier 1855. L'existence entière de Nerval fut dominée par l'obsession d'une autre vie dont seuls les rêves nous rendent compte. Aurélia est l'adorable créature surgie de ce monde invisible. Comme il l'a dit à Alexandre Dumas, Nerval était doué de la faculté de s'identifier à des personnages réels ou légendaires.

En 1891, Oscar Wilde aide un jeune étudiant d'Oxford, Lord Alfred Douglas (Bosie), fils du Marquis De Queensberry et entame une relation avec lui. Le père, membre de la chambre des Lords, a besoin de voir son nom réapparaître dans les journaux avec un rôle entièrement nouveau : Celui du père affectueux défenseur de la pureté et de la moralité, protégeant son fils des assauts de l'artiste pervers et dépravé. La loi anglaise, à cette époque, ne badinant pas avec l'homosexualité, il est condamné à deux ans de travaux forcés.

"The Theogony" (“Birth of the Gods”) is a poem by Hesiod which describes the origin, position and relationships of the gods of the Greek pantheon. Hesiod created a synthesis of the diverse Greek traditions concerning the gods, in the form of a hymn invoking Zeus and the Muses. The Theogony is the first known Greek mythical cosmogony. However, it should not be considered as the authoritative source of Greek mythology, but rather as a portrait of a dynamic tradition that was recorded around 700 BCE.

This group of 19th-century American poets was the first to rival their British counterparts in popularity. Gathered around their New England roots, they were also known as the Schoolroom or Household poets and comprised of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, William Cullen Bryant, John Greenleaf Whittier, James Russell Lowell and Olivier Wendell Holmes, Sr. Occasionally Ralph Waldo Emerson was included, although his poetic philosophy differed in some key aspects.

Kabir, meaning "Great" and one of the 99 names of God in Arabic, was a mystic and poet, born around 1440 in Varanasi to poor Muslim parents. Another account claims he was the child of a Brahmin widow. He himself said he was "at once the child of Allah and Ram". Kabir grew up learning his father’s craft of weaving and overcame many obstacles to become a disciple of Saint, or Swami, Ramananda, the leading pioneer of the Bhakti movement, which promoted salvation for all.

Andrew Marvell was born in Winestead-in-Holderness, in the East Riding of Yorkshire on March 31st, 1621. He was educated at Hull Grammar School, and at the age of 13 he attended Trinity College, Cambridge, and eventually received his BA degree. It is thought that in 1642 Marvell travelled in Europe and, while England was embroiled in its civil war, remained there until 1647, mastering several languages including French, Italian and Spanish.
