Schwer lagerte dichtes Gewölk über der dunklen Fläche der Adria, deren Küsten und Gewässer zusammenflossen in unterscheidungslosem Dunkel: nur ferne Blitze warfen hier und da ein zuckendes Licht über das schweigende Ravenna.

Deutlich erkannte er, dass der Fall der ganzen gotischen Sache die Folge gewesen wäre, hätte er die Krone niedergelegt oder das Heer verlassen.

Wie ein Donnerschlag aus heiterem Himmel traf Athalarichs plötzliches Ende die gotische Partei, die an diesem nämlichen Tage ihre Hoffnungen so hoch gespannt hatte. Alle Maßregeln, die der König in ihrem Sinne angeordnet, waren gelähmt, die Goten plötzlich wieder ohne Vertretung in dem Staat, an dessen Spitze jetzt die Regentin ganz allein gestellt war.
