As the 1900’s begin women are in a difficult situation. Whatever the pretence of society the reality for almost all women is that they are second class and the property of men. Whilst women have created enduring works of literature and poetry for centuries, much has remained hidden and voiceless. But technology and the mass distribution of printed materials has allowed new ideas and thoughts to circulate, to demand a voice. In this volume their talents and voices speak with determination, wisdom, courage and love on many subjects through their extraordinary verse.

Life is frenetic. Everything is running faster which usually means we are running later. Everything should have been done 5 minutes ago or better still yesterday. We are slowly falling behind, overwhelmed by busy lives in an ever-exacting world. In these more modern times, time is everything. There’s never enough of it. Classic poets down the decades and centuries have wisely observed that there are many things, both great and small, that bring a sense of stillness, an aura of calm, a chance to re-engage with our feelings and emotions purely by taking time for moments that matter.

In life’s kitbag of essentials food and drink are right at the top. Their variety and ways to consume are a wonder, both of nature’s offerings and human creativity. For our classic poets ranging from Ancient Romans to Elinor Wylie and Rainer Maria Rilke, their recipes for verse using the simple ingredients of words and imagination are a wonderful and enduring example of their craft and art applied to the one thing mankind looks forward to each and every day.

In 1971, in the wake of George Jackson's killing by San Quentin prison guards, a poem entitled "Enemy of the Sun" was found among ninety-nine books in the revolutionary's cell.

Along this journey called life, we experience strength and weakness, ups and downs, gains and losses, friends and enemies; yet wisdom is to realize that it all has its purpose, place and time. So, you see it is after facing our deepest despair that we are able to realize our greatest joy. It is our challenges that award us with knowledge. The Hesiod Collection presents an essential anthology of ancient Greek literature, showcasing the profound impact of Hesiod's works on the literary and philosophical traditions of the Western world. This collection features three of his most significant texts: "The Works and Days," "The Theogony," and "The Shield of Heracles." In "The Works and Days," Hesiod offers a unique blend of practical advice and moral instruction, addressing the challenges of rural life and the importance of hard work, justice, and piety.

The Shield of Heracles is an archaic Greek epic poem that was attributed to Hesiod during antiquity. The subject of the poem is the expedition of Heracles and Iolaus against Cycnus, the son of Ares, who challenged Heracles to combat as Heracles was passing through Thessaly. It has been suggested that this epic may reflect anti-Thessalian feeling after the First Sacred War (595–585 BCE): in the epic, a Thessalian hero interfering with the Phocian sanctuary is killed by a Boeotian hero (Heracles), whose mortal father Amphitryon had for allies Locrians and Phocians.
