In spätromantischen Gedichten verbindet er Empfindungsreichtum mit Skepsis und Ironie („Buch der Lieder“ 1827; „Romanzero“ 1851). Sein geistvoller und plaudernder Prosastil („Reisebilder“ 1826 bis 1831) machte ihn zum Begründer des modernen Feuilletonismus.

Ich weiß nicht, welches wunderliche Gefühl mich davon abhält, dergleichen Vorworte, wie es bei Gedichtsammlungen üblich ist, in schönen Rhythmen zu versifizieren. Seit einiger Zeit sträubt sich etwas in mir gegen alle gebundene Rede, und wie ich höre, regt sich bei manchen Zeitgenossen eine ähnliche Abneigung. Es will mich bedünken, als sei in schönen Versen allzu viel gelogen worden, und die Wahrheit scheue sich, in metrischen Gewanden zu erscheinen. – Heinrich Heine.
