Jim D'Ville's "Adventure In Failure" is a delightfully subversive collection of prose pieces that finds profound humor in life's most ordinary moments. With the sharp wit of a Mark Twain and the observational precision of a David Sedaris, D'Ville transforms everyday experiences—from laundromat visits to buying car insurance—into brilliant miniature meditations on modern existence.

Seville, present day. A gray archival box. A manuscript no one was expecting to find. When Roberto Alvarado, a Mexican-American historian of colonial Latin America, is summoned to the Archivo de Indias, he finds what appears to be an unpublished manuscript in the hand of Bartolomé de las Casas—the sixteenth-century Dominican friar who witnessed the Spanish conquest of the Americas and spent fifty years bearing witness to its destruction.

Judy Montagu spent her late teenage years and early twenties directing anti-aircraft defenses during the Second World War as a Captain in Gunnery for the British Army. Demobilised in 1946, she set out in search of fun and freedom in America and found herself swept into a bright and glamorous social circle. She soon counted Joe Alsop and the Cushing Sisters among her new friends and even began to consider becoming a US citizen. In 1949, determined to understand America more deeply, Judy embarked on a three-month tour of the country by Greyhound bus.
