After years spent honoring the stories of World War II veterans, and hearing their stories, Andrew Biggio, acclaimed author of The Rifle, turned his attention to the men who fought in the jungles, mountains, and villages of the Vietnam War. Armed with the same determination to preserve history before it disappears, he traveled across the country to meet with Vietnam veterans from every branch of service to have them sign the rifle and hear their stories.

On April 6, 1967, twenty-year-old US Navy Seaman Apprentice Doug Hegdahl fell off his ship, a guided-missile cruiser, in the Gulf of Tonkin. Close to exhaustion after nearly four hours in the water, he was picked up by a small fishing boat and soon found himself in Hỏa Lò Prison, the...

The Vietnam War did not begin in the jungle—and it did not end when the helicopters left Saigon. This gripping Vietnam War history takes listeners through the conflict America still feels today: the fear that shaped Washington, the soldiers sent into impossible conditions, the battles that changed public opinion, the secrets hidden from the American people, and the painful homecoming many veterans faced in silence.

In this captivating memoir, Bob J. Garcia, a door gunner from the 117th Assault Helicopter Company plunges listeners into a combat helicopter during the height of the Vietnam War and his lifelong struggles with PTSD. “We were God’s young lunatics. We were reckless as we faced death every day in Vietnam. We acted fearlessly, even when we were at times scared as we flew our thinly built Army helicopters into combat, the wind sometimes threatening to crash us into mountains and rice paddies.

The Vietnam experience was hellfire, privation, blood, sweat, and death. To the ground soldiers enduring it on the battlefields, the helicopter pilots flying above seemed a privileged few — removed from the "real" war, fighting at a distance from its harshest realities. But Bruce Lake's story invites a closer look. Bruce R. Lake flew hundreds of helicopter missions under hostile fire, earned 42 Air Medals and the Silver Star for a heroic rescue mission, and watched squadron brothers leave on missions they never came back from.

In early June 1967, Marine Corps recruits from Minneapolis-St. Paul and outlying Minnesota received a letter stating all those scheduled for active duty in June would go as one platoon on June 28, 1967. One hundred fifty Marine applicants would be shipped to San Diego, California, to the recruit training depot. The Minnesota Twins baseball team was sponsoring the unit. They were sworn in on television at a pregame ceremony and were guests of the Twins at the game.

Roy Raisor signed up to go to Vietnam before he was even eighteen years old, proudly intending to serve his country and do his patriotic duty. Inside, you will find the story of Roy's time in Vietnam through a first-hand account of his experiences. They fled through shadows, their hearts heavy with unspoken fears. Three sisters—bound by blood and an unyielding love—forced to abandon their once vibrant lives in Saigon as North Vietnam’s relentless advance shattered everything they knew. What had once been jasminescented evenings, and laughter became a landscape of smoke, chaos, and survival. Their escape through warravaged Cambodia was a journey carved from terror and fragile hope. Under a watchful sky, they dodged patrols, scavenged for scraps, and moved in silence as the rumble of artillery swallowed their whispers.

The last U.S. draftee reported for duty in 1973. Part I of Draftee includes a description of the personal journey of a draftee who survived combat in Vietnam. Part II includes a draftee’s perspective as to why and how the U.S. got into and eventually out of the War and how both the U.S. draft and the South Vietnamese draft influenced the outcome. Part III includes a review of military drafts and a proposal to replace the seriously flawed legacy Selective Service System with a policy that enables choice, celebration of citizenship, and promotes unity rather than divisiveness.

As a UH-1C gunship platoon leader and pilot in Vietnam, I can highly recommend Roger’s book. Primarily because while dozens of books have been written by pilots who flew in Vietnam, few have been written by crew chiefs who were as critical to mission success as the pilots and whose duties were not only varied but arguably more interesting.

On Valentine’s Day 1968, Kilo Company 3/9 left Ca Lu Combat in Vietnam on a combat patrol mission. Suddenly, as the Marines scaled the ridge in search of the enemy, chaos erupted. During a ferocious fiery attack from the North Vietnamese Army, ten Marines and Senior Corpsman HM2 Larry Jo Goss were killed. Two more Marines died later. While Larry’s body lay in the humid jungle for twenty-one days, his young wife, Marty, was only told that her husband was “MIA” and possibly taken by hostile forces. Desperately hoping and praying that Larry was still alive.

In the spring of 1967, Larry Richards was drafted into the Vietnam War. The conflict was intensifying. Casualties were rising. Twelve months of snipers, ambushes, and Agent Orange awaited. He was 21 years old. In the fall of 1990, Steven Bott was finishing up a day at work when the unthinkable happened. Several weeks later he woke up in a hospital bed with no memory, physically and cognitively crippled.

Most of what the average person knows about the Vietnam War is gleaned from movies, TV dramas, documentaries and autobiographical memoirs. The vast majority of those revolve around the experiences of infantrymen and pilots. What everybody doesn't know is that Less than 20% of the guys in Vietnam were either an infantryman or a pilot. In a war without front lines, anyone with boots on the ground could and did find themselves in mortal danger in the blink of an eye. The forgotten 80% of Vietnam vets have ALL kinds of stories to tell even if they're not always 'war' stories, per se.
