Robert S. McNamara was widely considered to be one of the most brilliant men of his generation. While he could be cold and arrogant, he was an invaluable friend to Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson as US secretary of defense and had a deeply moving relationship with Jackie Kennedy. Roger Lockshier enlisted in the US Army in April 1966. After completing Airborne (Paratrooper) Jump Training at Fort Benning GA, he was assigned to Aviation Battalion 101st Airborne Division, Fort Campbell Kentucky, December 1966. In December of 1967 the 101st Airborne Division was transferred to Viet Nam. Lockshier was a Crewchief / Doorgunner with the 101st Airborne's Black Angels Huey Helicopter Gunships assigned to provide combat support to the 101st Airborne and 5th Special Forces MACVSOG. He returned to the States in December of 1968.

Much has been written about America's war in Vietnam, and an enduring and troubling subtext is the composition of the body of soldiers that made up the US troop deployment: from the initially well-trained and disciplined group of largely elite units that served in the mid-sixties to what has been termed an "armed mob" by the end of that decade and into the early 1970s.

US Navy Seal Lieutenant Tom Norris, on three separate occasions over a four-day period, with no sleep, went behind enemy lines to rescue two downed air force pilots. Using stealth tactics, he was able to get though or around hundreds of North Vietnamese to rescue one pilot. As a UH-1C gunship platoon leader and pilot in Vietnam, I can highly recommend Roger’s book. Primarily because while dozens of books have been written by pilots who flew in Vietnam, few have been written by crew chiefs who were as critical to mission success as the pilots and whose duties were not only varied but arguably more interesting.

On Valentine’s Day 1968, Kilo Company 3/9 left Ca Lu Combat in Vietnam on a combat patrol mission. Suddenly, as the Marines scaled the ridge in search of the enemy, chaos erupted. During a ferocious fiery attack from the North Vietnamese Army, ten Marines and Senior Corpsman HM2 Larry Jo Goss were killed. Two more Marines died later. While Larry’s body lay in the humid jungle for twenty-one days, his young wife, Marty, was only told that her husband was “MIA” and possibly taken by hostile forces.
