The last U.S. draftee reported for duty in 1973. Part I of Draftee includes a description of the personal journey of a draftee who survived combat in Vietnam. Part II includes a draftee’s perspective as to why and how the U.S. got into and eventually out of the War and how both the U.S. draft and the South Vietnamese draft influenced the outcome. Part III includes a review of military drafts and a proposal to replace the seriously flawed legacy Selective Service System with a policy that enables choice, celebration of citizenship, and promotes unity rather than divisiveness.

As a UH-1C gunship platoon leader and pilot in Vietnam, I can highly recommend Roger’s book. Primarily because while dozens of books have been written by pilots who flew in Vietnam, few have been written by crew chiefs who were as critical to mission success as the pilots and whose duties were not only varied but arguably more interesting.

On Valentine’s Day 1968, Kilo Company 3/9 left Ca Lu Combat in Vietnam on a combat patrol mission. Suddenly, as the Marines scaled the ridge in search of the enemy, chaos erupted. During a ferocious fiery attack from the North Vietnamese Army, ten Marines and Senior Corpsman HM2 Larry Jo Goss were killed. Two more Marines died later. While Larry’s body lay in the humid jungle for twenty-one days, his young wife, Marty, was only told that her husband was “MIA” and possibly taken by hostile forces. Desperately hoping and praying that Larry was still alive.

Roger Lockshier enlisted in the US Army in April 1966. After completing Airborne (Paratrooper) Jump Training at Fort Benning GA, he was assigned to Aviation Battalion 101st Airborne Division, Fort Campbell Kentucky, December 1966. In December of 1967 the 101st Airborne Division was transferred to Viet Nam. Lockshier was a Crewchief / Doorgunner with the 101st Airborne's Black Angels Huey Helicopter Gunships assigned to provide combat support to the 101st Airborne and 5th Special Forces MACVSOG. He returned to the States in December of 1968.

Robert S. McNamara was widely considered to be one of the most brilliant men of his generation. While he could be cold and arrogant, he was an invaluable friend to Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson as US secretary of defense and had a deeply moving relationship with Jackie Kennedy. McNamara was the leading advocate for American escalation in Vietnam during the summer of 1965, strongly urging Johnson to send hundreds of thousands of American ground troops just weeks before he concluded that the war was unwinnable. 

During the course of his military career, Bud Day won every available combat medal, escaped death on no less than seven occasions, and spent 67 months as a POW in the infamous Hanoi Hilton, along with John McCain. Despite sustained torture, Day would not break. He became a hero to POWs everywhere—a man who fought without pause, not a prisoner of war, but a prisoner at war.

My Year in Vietnam takes Phillip I. Elkins, a.k.a. Señor Felipe, from getting on the plane to Vietnam and the shock of arrival in Vietnam and seeing the cargo hold of the plane being loaded with GIs in caskets. From there he is assigned to his unit, at first in Saigon, where he meets some of the locals and gets involved with them. Then he’s sent up into the Central Highlands with the 1st Cavalry Division as a preventive medicine specialist under a Sergeant Sidell, who hates draftees, which of course, is what Elkins is.

So, who fits the soldier with the emotional and spiritual prosthesis? "Where The Light Enters" is a memoir about the impact the Vietnam War had on one soldier's life. It is a healing story, a spiritual journey, and the path taken in search of redemption, reconciliation, and reconnection. It is not a war story but rather a story of war.
