Thomas Watson (c. 1620-1686) was an English Puritan preacher and author who served as vicar of St. Stephen's Walbrook. As a Man Thinketh is an inspirational book by James Allen, first published in 1903. It deals with the power of thought, and particularly with the use and application of thought to create happy and prosperous circumstances. The writing is simple, so that all can easily grasp the teachings and put the methods into practice. In the earlier work, From Poverty to Power: The Realization of Prosperity and Peace, (1901) Allen emphasizes that a disciplined mind and a focus on serving others are the keys to achieving prosperity.

This is Leo Tolstoy's integration of the four biblical gospels into a single account of the life of Jesus. The Gospel in Brief is an intriguing fusion of biblical texts and Tolstoy's own religious views. Tolstoy explains that his goal is a “solution to the problem of life," not a theological or historical statement. He therefore ignores issues like Jesus' genealogy and divinity, focusing instead on the words and teachings of Jesus, stripped of what he regarded as the Church's distortions and focus on dogma and ritual.

James Denney was a Scottish New Testament scholar, pastor, and theologian (1856 - 1917). The author was convinced that the death of Christ was not given the proper importance in the common Christian mind, measured against its centrality in the New Testament. Through the 12 chapters of the book, he argues that Jesus Christ fulfilled the Messianic hopes of many of the Old Testament prophecies.

View of the Hebrews; or the Tribes of Israel in America is an 1823 book by Ethan Smith, a Congregationalist minister, who argued that Native Americans were descended from the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel. The lost 10 tribes were believed to have disappeared after being taken captive by the Assyrians in the eighth century BCE. Smith's speculation was inspired by the apocryphal book II Esdras 13:41, which claims that the ten tribes settled in a far country, "where never mankind dwelt."
