First published in 1925, The Everlasting Man is in many ways a direct rebuttal to H.G. Wells’s The Outline of History, wherein he states that man is merely a development from animal life, and that Jesus was just a charismatic figure. Although a popular secular idea at the time, Chesterton believed otherwise. He argued that in order to understand both humanity and history, we ought first to recognise the uniqueness of both man and Christ.

Written in his signature style – full of paradox, wit and poetic insight – Chesterton outlines an intellectually rigorous defence of the Christian faith. Part autobiography, part theology, Orthodoxy traces Chesterton's personal journey from a crisis of doubt to belief, arguing that Christianity uniquely satisfies the long-established human need for truth, imagination and joy. Rather than religious doctrine being dry or dogmatic in any way, Chesterton relays it as adventurous and romantic – and the only worldview that allows enough room to make sense of the world's wonders and contradictions.
