Lucy Maud Montgomery (1874-1942), a Canadian author, is well known for her work Anne of Green Gables (1908). She is the author of over 500 short stories, poems, and essays. The Ragged-Trousered Philanthropists chronicles the tale of Frank Owen, a traveling socialist visionary making his way from town to town in the name of the socialist revolution. When spring arrives, Frank Owen decides to settle in the quiet town of Mugsborough, and joins a group of workmen who are painting the home of a wealthy neighborhood resident. Owen is quickly befriended by two fellow workmen: Bodgit and Scarpy. Scarpy is thin and nearly emaciated. When the men break for lunch Scarpy never has much to eat; only a bit of bread, or a biscuit and tea.

The old phrase, "No good deed goes unpunished" may well be the premise of this delightful holiday poem from beloved writer James Whitcomb Riley. A father's surprise may seem to backfire in a very literal way. Written in a fun dialect this story poem is for all ages.

Originally published in 1882, in The Century magazine by Frank R Stockton, this short story has become an allegorical expression for an unsolvable problem.

This collection was first published in 1916 and contains some of Frost’s most famous poems, including "The Road Not Taken", "Hyla Brook", and "Birches". Frost’s dedication reads: "To You - who least need reminding that before this interval of the South Branch under black mountains, there was another interval, the Upper at Plymouth, where we walked in spring beyond the covered bridge; but that the first interval of all was the old farm, our brook interval, so called by the man we had it from in sale."
