The Tao Te Ching is a Chinese classic text traditionally credited to the 6th-century BC sage Lao Tzu. The text's authorship, date of composition, and date of compilation are debated. The Tao Te Ching, along with the Zhuangzi, is a fundamental text for both philosophical and religious Taoism. It also strongly influenced other schools of Chinese philosophy and religion, including Legalism, Confucianism, and Buddhism, which was largely interpreted through the use of Taoist words and concepts when it was originally introduced to China.

The Tao Te Ching is a compilation of meditations, comprised of 81 short chapters. Each chapter reflects on the beauty and mystical nature of the Tao (the Way). Tao Te Ching (Book of the Way) is one of the oldest written works that provides advice and guidance on perspective, inner strength, divine power, and moral excellence, among other principles of the universe. This 21st-century edition has been translated so that ancient text (originally written in classical Chinese in the fourth century BC) can be understood and enjoyed by the average listener.

Hippias of Elis travels throughout the Greek world practicing and teaching the art of making beautiful speeches. On a rare visit to Athens, he meets Socrates, who questions him about the nature of his art. Socrates is especially curious about how Hippias would define beauty. They agree that beauty makes all beautiful things beautiful, but when Socrates presses him to say precisely what he means, Hippias is unable to deliver such a definition.

En mettant en scène son maître Socrate, Platon inaugure ce geste intellectuel primordial : s'interroger soi-même, pour mettre en évidence préjugés et erreurs, et comprendre ce qui fait véritablement la morale, la vie en société, la valeur d'une vie humaine. Sans cette interrogation honnête et lucide, il n'y aurait qu'à fonctionner mécaniquement, comme un robot qui ne sait pourquoi il avance.

Sa méthode est simple et directe : pour apprendre à l'autre à penser par lui-même, il faut questionner sans cesse, afin de mettre au jour les préjugés, présomptions et contradictions. L'autre est amené par un jeu de questions à découvrir lui-même son erreur, ce qui lui permet enfin d'accueillir la vérité.
