In seinem philosophischen Hauptwerk Die Welt als Wille und Vorstellung verwirft Arthur Schopenhauer jede Form von Glücklehre und entwickelt aus einem einzigen genialen Gedanken heraus eine denkbar pessimistische Sicht auf das Dasein als solches und eine Lehre von der Verneinung des Willens zum Leben. Kaum an einer anderen Stelle in seinem Werk spricht er dies so klar und so ausführlich aus wie in den hier zu hörenden Ergänzungen zum vierten Buch des 1. Bandes seines Hauptwerks.

"Was ist das Wesen des Lachens? Was steckt hinter dem Lächerlichen? Was haben die Grimasse eines Clowns, ein Wortspiel, eine Verwechslung in einem Schwank, eine geistvolle Lustspielszene miteinander gemeinsam?" Der französische Philosoph und Literaturnobelpreisträger (1927) Henri Bergson (1859 - 1941) ging dieser Frage in seinem Essay Le Rire (Das Lachen) aus dem Jahr 1900 nach. Das Werk ist nicht nur eine Theorie des Komischen, sondern auch gleichzeitig eine Hommage an künstlerische Kreativität.

Schopenhauer: here's when great philosophy can be somber, pessimistic, even brutal, and still resonate with a sarcastic laugh. He was among the first to contend that the universe is essentially not a rational place; in his most famous work, "The World as Will and Representation", he argues that the individuals of a species do not have as much free will as is ordinarily thought, as the only will that matters is that of the species, which is to reproduce and carry on. Schopenhauer is very well-known for his radical stance on women, aesthetics, and rhetoric.

In Beyond Good and Evil, Friedrich Nietzsche attacks past philosophers for their alleged lack of critical sense and their blind acceptance of Christian premises in their consideration of morality. The work moves into the realm "beyond good and evil" in the sense of leaving behind the traditional morality, which Nietzsche subjects to a destructive critique, in favor of what he regards as an affirmative approach that fearlessly confronts the contextual nature of knowledge.

The philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche's autobiography, Ecce Homo, was the last prose work that he wrote before his illness in 1889. Coming at the end of an extraordinarily productive year in which he had produced The Twilight of the Idols and The Antichrist, Nietzsche shuns any pretense at modesty with chapter titles include “Why I am so Wise”, “Why I am so Clever” and “Why I Write Such Excellent Books”.
