Sigmund Freud publicó en 1930 "El malestar en la cultura", el segundo tratado completo de Freud sobre teoría cultural, junto con su obra de 1921 "Psicología de las masas y análisis del yo". En ella, Freud describe el conflicto entre el individuo con su impulso de satisfacer sus pulsiones y la sociedad, que presiona constantemente para contener estas pulsiones. La obra es uno de los escritos de crítica cultural más influyentes del siglo XX y es relevante en términos psicológicos y sociológicos. We are face to face with this great world, and our relations to it are manifold. One of these is the necessity we have to live, to till the soil, to gather food, to clothe ourselves, to get materials from nature. We are always making things that will satisfy our needs, always in touch with this great world through hunger and thirst. Then, we have our mind; and our mind seeks its own food. It must find out reason in things, faced with a multiplicity of facts, and bewildered when it cannot find one unifying principle which simplifies the heterogeneity of things.

Whether self-knowledge is a decision to mature or even if it is a decision for us to be recognised by our environment, the variety of the subject-matter proposes introspections with a view to understanding. For there is a crucial distinction between what one knows and what one has established as a position. Led astray by formulas of improvement, human beings lose the strength of their established position. The established position is derived from the essence of their ETHOS and not from the achievement of expediencies for survival.
