This 1902 address by Clarence Darrow is considered a milestone in the history of social criticism. Darrow gives the man behind bars a crash course in the theory and practice of criminology and law. He discusses, among others, the nature of crime, its causes, why more people land in prison in winter than in summer, and why the US penal system is a system of injustice.

The autobiography of Louis Hughes serves as a window on the daily lives of slaves before and during the Civil War. Born into slavery near Charlottesville, Virginia in 1832, the narrative charts his life through Pontotoc, Mississippi to Memphis where he met his wife Matilda Morgan, to Tombigbee, Alabama and escape from slavery in Mississippi in 1865. Hughes provides unique historical insight into slavery in the Confederacy during the Civil War and concludes with the family living as free people in Milwaukee.

David Bennett Hill was an American politician and renowned orator. During Hill’s illustrious political career he served as a US State Senator and the Governor of New York. Hill delivered his "I Am a Democrat and Not a Revolutionist" speech, what is now considered his most famous speech, at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago on the 9th of July 1896. The speech took place in the heat of voracious debate regarding the value of silver in the US at the time and its vast ramifications from a political, economic, and public standpoint.

The great abolitionist speaker and author Harriet Ann Jacobs was born into slavery in 1813 in North Carolina. When her mother died, Harriet’s mistress, Margaret Horniblow, cared for her and taught her to read, write, and sew, but when Horniblow died, she suffered the misery of cruel masters.

Elinore Pruitt Stewart (1876-1933) was a homesteader in Wyoming and a memoirist who, between 1909 and 1914, wrote a series of engaging letters describing her life. The letters, which are short stories, reveal an adventurous and resourceful personality. They were first published in the Atlantic Monthly.

In this 1847 speech of Douglass to the American Anti-Slavery Society, he states that slavery is such a gigantic crime that every opportunity ought to be used to expose it. Dismissing political parties and the church as viable ways to end slavery, he gives examples of how instances of peaceful moral protest against slavery were suppressed. Behind the Scenes, or Thirty Years a Slave, and Four Years in the White House is the life story of Elizabeth Keckley, a shrewd entrepreneur who, while enslaved, raised enough money to purchase freedom for herself and her son. Working as a seamstress and dressmaker for the wives of influential politicians, Keckley helped organize an auction of dresses that belonged to Mary Todd Lincoln, the former first lady. The auction elicited strong criticism from the Washington elite.

Cassius Marcellus Clay was a Kentucky planter, politician, and abolitionist. He freed the slaves on the estate inherited from his father and paid them a wage. Clay argued that no cordial union could exist between liberty and slavery, concluding his speech with, “If you would have peace, be just, for justice is the only peace.”

Susie King Taylor (1848-1912) was the first black army nurse. She tended to an all black army troop the 33rd United States Colored Infantry Regiment, where her husband served during the Civil War. This account covers her early life and her memoirs of the war.

William Lloyd Garrison (1805-1879) was a prominent abolitionist, journalist, and social reformer. He referred to slavery as "a gangrene preying upon our vitals" and as a curse that is debasing in its effect. He called for the liberation of those who were subjected in hopeless bondage and to crush the vampire of slavery that was feeding upon the lifeblood of the Republic.

This 1890 publication documents the New York City slums in the 1880s. Jacob Riis’ work lays at the foundation of the Muckraker era, a progressive movement that created awareness and ultimately reformed societal and class issues.

The author was born a slave on a plantation near Wilmington, North Carolina. He discusses the religious meetings he conducted as a slave near Wilmington, including encounters with patrols that attempted to prevent such meetings, and instances of benign social interaction between the races. This 1885 edition of Thomas H Jones's expanded 1862 edition of his memoir includes an addendum on his ministry during slavery and on his experiences as a minister on the abolitionist lecture circuit.

As the most famous name to join the lecture circuit renouncing slavery, Frederick Douglass abandons the image of the victim and encourages emancipation. A true supporter of self-development, Douglass preaches the importance of helping yourself before you can truly help others. In his mind, empathy and strength can only be gained once you fight your way from a slave to a man.

Charles Alexander Eastman (1858-1939) was raised among the Sioux and decided to become a doctor in order to be of the greatest service to his people. He also became a distinguished writer and an interpreter of Native American life and customs. The Soul of the Indian is a rare eye-witness account of native religion with its ceremonial and symbolic worship, oral scriptures and view of the spirit world.

Giovanni Caboto (John Cabot), in the service of King Henry VII of England, crossed the Atlantic and reached land in the summer of 1497. This account comprises three reports of contemporary witnesses. It seems likely that Cabot explored the coast of Labrador.
