Jahrhundert Bischof Theodemir der Erste, der von einem Eremiten unter Beobachtung der hellsten Sterne zur Grabstätte des Heiligen Jakobus geführt wurde. Der berühmteste Jakobsweg ist der Camino Frances, den auch wir für unsere Reise zum Ziel, Santiago de Compostela in Nordspanien, ausgewählt haben. Der Name Jakobsweg wurde nach Sankt Jakob, einem der 12 Apostel Jesu Christi, benannt.

In Italy, to me, even hanging laundry is beautiful, as it stretches from end to end between buildings. As I take photos in this grand city, I try to capture the endless majesty of her churches, monuments, and people. It is becoming therapeutic.

In unserer Herberge befanden wir uns freilich sehr übel. Die Kost, wie sie der Maultierknecht bereiten konnte, war nicht die beste. Eine Henne, in Reis gekocht, wäre dennoch nicht zu verachten gewesen, hätte sie nicht ein unmäßiger Safran so gelb als ungenießbar gemacht. Das unbequemste Nachtlager hätte uns beinahe genötigt, Hackerts Juchtensack wieder hervorzuholen, deshalb sprachen wir morgens zeitig mit dem freundlichen Wirte. Er bedauerte, dass er uns nicht besser versorgen könne: „Da drüben aber ist ein Haus, wo Fremde gut aufgehoben sind und alle Ursache haben zufrieden zu sein.“

Ja, ich bin endlich in dieser Hauptstadt der Welt angelangt! Wenn ich sie in guter Begleitung, angeführt von einem recht verständigen Manne, vor fünfzehn Jahren gesehen hätte, wollte ich mich glücklich preisen. Sollte ich sie aber allein, mit eignen Augen sehen und besuchen, so ist es gut, dass mir diese Freude so spät zuteil ward. Über das Tiroler Gebirg bin ich gleichsam weggezogen. Verona, Vicenz, Padua, Venedig habe ich gut, Ferrara, Cento, Bologna flüchtig und Florenz kaum gesehen.
