At the end of World War 1, D. H. Lawrence and his wife, Frieda ("the queen bee"), exiled themselves from England and set up home in Sicily. On the spur of the moment, Lawrence proposed a short trip to Sardinia. Setting off before dawn, they embarked on a whirlwind tour, by train to Palermo, ferry to Cagliari, and by train and bus to Terranova, returning to Rome by ferry. Back in Sicily, Lawrence wrote Sea and Sardinia, one of the great travel journals of the 20th century, in six weeks and entirely from memory.

諸国において最も格式が高い神社とされる一宮だが、時代による変遷等の影響で、一国に複数存在する場合もある。阿波国には四社存在し、その一社、大麻比古神社は、当シリーズの第弐拾五社「阿波から安房へ　神祀る忌部と聖なる『大麻』」で紹介した。今回取り上げる八倉比売神社（やくらひめじんじゃ）も、阿波一宮の一社である。当社は、徳島市西方の杉尾山に鎮座するが、麓には阿波史跡公園があり、縄文時代から中世にかけての巨大遺跡が存在する。徳島有数の古墳地帯で、「国府町」の地名の通り、阿波国府があった場所でもあり、古代、繁栄した地であった。社殿は、前方後円墳の前に立っており、その古墳は「奥の院」と称され、上にこの地域の特産「阿波の青石」で築かれた、五角形の祭壇が鎮座している。また、当社に伝わる古文書には、何と天照大神の葬儀の様子が事細かに記されている。これらを踏まえ、当社の古墳こそが、邪馬台国の女王・卑弥呼の墓とする説もある。さらに、折口信夫によれば、天照大神は三種に分かれるが、阿波ではその一つ、水の女神として信仰されているという。、すぐ近くに五角形の井戸を持つ「天乃真名井」があり、かつては社殿の瓦に龍の浮彫があったなど、水との関わりは深い。特異な「神の死」伝承の意味を考える。（カバー画像のイラストは日本神話と邪馬台国を題材とする小説「ラスト・シャーマン」の著者・長緒鬼無里氏による。同作品には高橋御山人の解

新潟県北東、佐渡よりもさらに北の海に浮かぶ粟島。一島一村の粟島浦村に帰属し、独自に発電所も所有する。佐渡と同じく、西海岸は日本海の荒波に削られ、断崖絶壁の奇観を成し、初夏には岩ゆりで彩られる。歴史も古く、縄文遺跡が残り、万葉集には粟島を詠んだ歌が残っている。東海岸、島の中心集落・内浦の八所神社は、島の総鎮守と言えるが、その祭神は古代から天皇の守護神として宮中で祀られて来た「宮中八神」であり、歴史の古さの窺わせる。伝承によれば、最初に島に住んでいたのは蝦夷であった。9世紀初め頃には北部九州から松浦家がやって来て、内浦にて共存したという。やがて越前より本保家が渡って来ると、蝦夷と松浦家は西海岸に追いやられた。その後蝦夷は滅亡する。それから様々な変遷を経て、政治面を担う本保家、財政面を担う脇川家、学問面を担う神丸家と、各氏族が役割分担して島を統治して来た。このように、一つの島にあって、様々な氏族があるいは争い、あるいは共存して興亡する様は、一国の歴史を見るようでもある。本土と隔絶した自然が、こうした独自の歴史と文化を育んで来たのだ。常識をはるかに超越したゆるキャラ「泡姫ちゃん」など、現代の粟島にも、その独自性、独立性を見る事が出来る。離島というメインストリームに「まつろわぬ」存在を考察する。
