Sawar aur doosray Afsanay is the first collection of short stories by Shamsur Rahman Faruqui. The theme of this collection of stories is the Indian culture of that time, narrated through 18th-century Delhi. The 18th century has probably been the most controversial in India's history of the last thousand years. According to the historiography that makes up the consciousness of modern India, it was an age of decadence and arrogance. In contrast, Shamsur Rahman Faruqi depicts in detail that Indian society was presenting the most developed view of a mixed Hindu-Muslim tradition.

In "Photographer", time plays a pivotal role in this story that unravels in a reclusive guesthouse. In "Baray Aadmi", the innocent and vibrant Zakiya Begum extends her heart to many, but is unable to recognize the manipulative tendencies of those around her. In "Aik Tasveer", the author/narrator observes the life span of Damyunti Devi, from a recently widowed young woman to an aging socialite. And in "Hasab Nasab", Chammi Begum fiercely holds on to her family’s lineage and honor as life takes her through unexpected and trying paths.

Rajinder Singh Bedi (1 September 1915-1984) was an Indian Urdu writer of the progressive writers' movement and a playwright, who later worked in Hindi cinema as a film director, screenwriter and dialogue writer. Bedi is considered one of the leading 20th century progressive writers of Urdu fiction, and one of the most prominent Urdu fiction writers. He is most known for "disturbing" Partition of India tales. This collection includes the following: "Garam Coat"; "Lajwanti"; and "Sirf Ek Cigarette."

Intizar Hussain is recognized as the greatest contemporary Pakistani Urdu fiction writer. Among his numerous awards is a nomination for the Man Booker International Prize in 2013.
