Alexander Kuprin prefaced his novel The Pit about the lives of early 20th century Russian prostitutes as follows, "I know many people will find this novel amoral and inappropriate, but nevertheless I dedicated it from the bottom of my heart to mothers and young people" Indeed, the novel's publication was followed by an explosion of outrage. The "good" society accused Kuprin of slander and forever exiled him from its sitting rooms, charity auctions, and holiday balls. Progressive intellecutals winced and shuddered, but could not help admitting Kuprin had a point.

The great scientists Louis Pasteur (1822-1893) and Joseph Lister (1827-1912) revolutionized medical practice in the 19th century. Alfred Lichtenstein wurde als Sohn eines Fabrikanten am 23.08.1889 in Berlin geboren. In seiner Geburtsstadt besuchte er das Luisenstädtische Gymnasium, welches er 1909 mit dem Abitur abschloss. Zunächst studierte er Rechtswissenschaften in Berlin, später in Erlangen. 1910 begann er erste Gedichte zu veröffentlichen. Zunächst in den frühexpressionistischen Zeitschriften "Sturm" bei Herwarth Walden, ab 1912 auch in der "Aktion" bei Franz Pfemfert.
