In 1816, Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley and her husband Percy Bysshe Shelley visited Lord Byron in Switzerland. Joseph Sheridan LeFanu was one of the major figures of 19th centrury supernaturalism. He helped move supernaturalist fiction away from the Gothic's emphasis on external sources of terror and toward a focus on the effects of terror, thus helping to create the psychological basis for supernaturalist and horror lit that continues today.

Three interrelated stories make up the plot of The Suicide Club. They each stand on their own, but there is an overall plot that brings them together. It centers around the hero, Prince Florizel of Bohemia. He attempts to solve the mystery of a strange club that turns out to have a very different purpose than its name suggests.

The woman in white, it turns out, is Anne Catherick, who was confined in an asylum by the evil Sir Percival because she knew a devastating secret about him.
