"When Rose Henderson steps off the train at the Harrisville Depot, she is confident that she can make a new start as a hatmaker and create a home for herself as far away from her father and his plans for her as possible. But when she meets the man who has promised to marry her, she suddenly finds her plans beginning to unravel. With barely any money to her name and an unstable future ahead of her, will Rose be able to find a place for herself in Harrisville, or will she have to succumb to her father’s will instead?

In this debut pamphlet, the author draws on her experiences as a young teen emigrating from London to Georgetown, Guyana in 1976 for her mother’s remarriage. The poetry moves between intimate memory and wider social histories, examining sexuality, motherhood, loss and displacement. Attentive...

From reluctantly residing in a squat to the rules of Cricket, embark on a free-ranging potpourri of poetry that will render the listener to tears before producing intermittent cries of laughter. This genre-bending compendium weaves many of the author's true experiences as a self-described hobo together with an entertaining brand of lyrical nonsense, testing the listener's contrasting emotions to their absolute limit. If coming out the other side of life's difficulties and addictions can influence or encourage just one person to do the same, this publication will not have been compiled in vain.

"A Poet collects, from the early moments in his life, the first times he took to writing. The book explores what writing and poetry is for a person, for a dyslexic, for a people, and for one's sanity—with themes of growing up, family, hope, and magic." Poetry has always been a part of my life. Before I ever wrote it down… I saw it, or felt it. It was there, but hard to grasp or grab: like Peter’s shadow, or a coy forest nymph…. I’ve since made a sport of chasing poem across blank pages… And instead of leaving muddy footprints, in my wake are left letters and words.

Why sing Walt Whitman's poetry? Simply because, on a melancholy day, while reading his poems, a melody came to me. It was the melody of a sailor—a son—returning to port with sorrow in his heart, pleading through his song. Pleading with life itself that this death not be true. Yet with each verse came the quiet realization that reality cannot be undone by words alone. Still, a chant, the gentle waves of a melody, can offer solace—a comfort not unlike a childhood lullaby.
