Aab-e-Gum is one of the most fascinting books in Urdu on human behaviors, humor and satire with a tinge of sadness. The story follows Basharat and his adventures in Pakistan. Throughout the book Basharat and his family learn to deal with Pakisitan, their new home while missing India. The book consists of a series of stories that help the listener understand what the author was experiencing as that transition is made.

The world's first and longest magical fantasy HOSHRUBA (1883-1893) was compiled in the Urdu language in Lucknow by two of its greatest story-tellers, Syed Muhammad Husain Jah and Ahmed Husain Qamar, wrote a fantasy in the Urdu language whose equal had not been heard before, and which has never been rivaled since. About the author: Krishan Chander (1914-1977) was an Urdu/Hindi writer of short stories and novels. He was a prolific writer, penning over 20 novels, 30 collections of short stories and scores of radio plays in Urdu and later, after partition of the country, took to writing mainly in Hindi. He also wrote screenplays for Bollywood movies to supplement his meager income as an author of satirical stories. Krishan Chander's novels have been translated into over 16 Indian languages and some foreign languages, including English.

Shafiq-ur-Rahman (November 9, 1920-March 19, 2000) was a Pakistani humorist and a short story writer in Urdu. He was a medical doctor by profession and served in the Pakistan Army. He received Hilal-e-Imtiaz for his military and civilian services. Rahman's work added a new dimension to humor in Urdu literature. His unforgettable characters include Razia, Shaitaan, Hukoomat Aapa, Maqsood Ghora, Buddy, Judge Sahab, Nannha and many others.

"Naya Qanoon" is a classic Urdu short story set in the background of British rule in the sub-continent. It was inspired by the promulgation of the Act of India, 1935. The story revolves around a tonga driver, Mangoo, who despises the British colonizers and cannot wait for the new act which he mistakenly believes will end colonial rule. He receives a big shock when on the first day under the new act he refuses to be humiliated by a British customer and hits back. He is shocked when he is arrested for assualting a Gora Sahib.
