Sir Hugh Seymour Walpole (1884-1941) was a New Zealand-born English novelist famous for his skill at scene setting and vivid plots. William James Wintle (1861-1920) was a Welsh writer who later became Oblate for the Abbey of Caldey Island in Wales. It was there that he wrote a series of ghost tales for the entertainment of eight boys who attended there. Wintle wrote that the stories were originally told on Sunday nights while "crouching over a wood fire on a wind-swept island off the Western shore".

David Caradoc Evans (1878-1945), was a Welsh story writer, novelist and playwright. Evans was brought up in a Welsh-speaking community in Cardiganshire, and although he learned English at school and always wrote in English, his work is soaked in Welsh syntax and vocabulary. Evans left school at 14 and worked throughout Wales in a series of menial jobs before moving to London, where he worked as a draper's apprentice.

Richard Horatio Edgar Wallace (1875-1932) was an English writer of 957 short stories and over 170 novels. He is widely recognized as one of the most prolific writers of his age. 'White Stockings' is a compelling and cleverly constructed story about a vengeful jilted lover with a gambling addiction, a racing tout, a gullible lover, a hairdresser and a wily old racehorse owner...most of whom are hell-bent on double-crossing each other.

Alexander W. Drake (1843-1916) was an American wood engraver and art collector and director of the art department for Scribner’s and Century magazine. His weird tales were collected by friends to memorialize him following his death in 1916. 'The Curious Vehicle' (1893) is the story of a man who is intrigued by a strange carriage on the street and watches it curiously until one snowy Christmas Eve he is invited inside by the mysterious owner.

'Wailing Well' is the story of a group of boy scouts camping somewhere on the downs in the south of England who are warned not to go into a particular field which contains a single clump of trees. A local shepherd relates a strange story about the place, which he refers to as Wailing Well.
