Die Londoner Zeitung "The Daily Chronicle" hatte berichtet, ein Gefängnisaufseher sei entlassen worden, weil er einem hungrigen Kinde, das im Gefängnis eingesperrt war, ein paar Cakes zu essen gegeben habe. Darauf richtete O. W. folgenden Brief an den Herausgeber des Blattes.

Ein Glücksfall für die Historiker: Harry Graf Kessler (1868 - 1937) beschreibt das Zeitgeschehen der Jahres 1932. Seine Berichterstattungen sind sehr genau und zeugen von der Bildung eines aufgeklärten Europäers. 1932 ist wie ein langer dunkler Dezember ohne Advent und Weihnachten. Der größte Teil des Textes behandelt die aufgeheizten Debatten um die Politik des Tages (5 große Wahlen in 8 Monaten). Den Terror der Nazis auf den Straßen und die Sabotage der Weimarer Institutionen aus den Hinterzimmern des Parlaments.

Die "Reiseblätter" bestehen ausschließlich aus Briefen Goethes, in welchen er Freunden, Sympathisanten, Geistesverwandten und anderen nahestehenden Menschen seine Gedanken mitteilt. Da Goethes Intellekt sich gerne und ausgiebig mit interdisziplinären Gegenständen auseinandersetzte, wird der geneigte Zuhörer mit Themen aus Wissenschaft, Kunst, Kultur, Politik und Gesellschaft konfrontiert, in welchen das persönliche Verständnis und Verhältnis des Autors dazu im Vordergrund steht.
