Agaton Sax, private detective and editor of the world’s smallest newspaper (but also the best), loves a good trick. Mind you, a brain like his is hard to fool. Upon receiving a mysterious telegram during breakfast, the detective-cum-newspaper-editor soon finds himself searching to uncover the enigma around it. But it’s not just one criminal mastermind behind this confounding communique—it’s a whole cabal of them! And when the super sleuth discovers that they have captured his friend and confidant Inspector Lispington, Sweden’s finest crimefighter must rescue his friend as well as put a stop to the dastardly devils and their pernicious master plan—one that has the potential to spell the end for Sweden’s most famous detective!

This wonderful short story from Merv Lambert takes place in Videoville, an unusual town where movies are made. Not all the animals who live there are friendly, however. Take Mr. Rockhopper, for example. He can be one angry penguin! Skidder, probably the fastest penguin in the West, can be relied on to be careless, but his small friend Pudden will amaze you. And as for Skidder’s sister, Trendy Wendy, she often sets the fashion for the younger members of the town. Parapenguins is a delightful short story that children will love!

The (completely) true story of how the smoothie was invented. The Fruitopians eat only fruit; just over the road in Vegtaville, they're potty about peas. One day (and quite by mistake), our Fruitopian hero, Huck, drops a very squishy peach on his enemy, Drool. Unfortunately, Drool is the biggest boy in Vegtaville and the son of the Vegtavillain king. This starts a battle between the two towns, which becomes the biggest food fight in history. It reaches its conclusion when food history is made!

Max is just an ordinary, slightly scruffy boy, until he burps, and that’s when he turns into a huge monster, with teeth like swords, who can jump over buildings, roar loudly and eat whole dustbins. It's great being a monster whose aim is to 'protect and do good stuff' until Max sneezes...and when he does, he turns back into a boy again, often far from home and dressed only in his pants. But his arch enemy, Peregrine, a boy his age has invented a POOP (Portable Operating Omni Prison) machine to catch Monster Max and put him in a zoo.

Charlie's Ark is about a five-year-old boy and his toy-box, in the shape of an ark, in which he keeps his many animals that all come to life in his Imagination (or do they?). One never sees Charlie's face, or indeed that of his sister, Sally, which adds to the air of mystery, and helps each child identify further with the characters. The First Collection features eight short stories, each wonderfully read by Mike Payne.
