Around the World in Eighty Days (1873) is an acclaimed adventure novel by Jules Verne. It relates the adventures of Phileas Fogg and his French valet Passepartout as they attempt to circumnavigate the world in eighty days. So the lands produced nothing but carrots, turnips, onions, and parsnips. Satan was furious, but St. Michael offered to give him everything that grew underground the next year. The following year, all of Satan’s lands were covered with wheat, oats, peas, and cabbage that thrives above ground.

Andrew Lang (1844 - 1912) was a Scottish poet, novelist, and literary critic. His 12 collections of fairy tales are known as Andrew Lang's Coloured Fairy Books or Andrew Lang's Fairy Books of Many Colors. The third in the series, the Green Fairy Book, contains tales from around the world, from Grimm (“The White Snake” and “Spindle, Shuttle, and Needle”), France de Caylus, Fenelon, Kletke, and D'Aulnoy. Phantastes: A Faerie Romance for Men and Women is a fantasy novel by the Scottish author George MacDonald, first published in 1858. It is the story of a young man, Anodos, who enters a dreamlike realm where he experiences breathtaking adventures, while encountering a host of entities like tree spirits, gnomes, monsters, and giants as well as his own shadow. All the time, he searches for his ideal of female beauty, in the form of the "Marble Lady". After having been killed in Fairy Land, Anodos wakes up on Earth, retaining the memory of his adventures in the realm of dreams.

Of the two major ancient Greek epic poems attributed to Homer, The Odyssey serves to some extent as a sequel to The Iliad. The poem describes the journey home of Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, after the fall of Troy. The story of The Scarlet Plague takes place in 2073 in the San Francisco area, 60 years after an apocalyptic pandemic called the Red Death or Scarlet Plague has depopulated the Earth. James Smith, one of the survivors, lives with his grandsons who are hunter-gatherers in a tribal world.
