The sailing ship Mortzestus is far from shore when the wind drops away and a mysterious mist surrounds the ship. As the days drift by, the observant sailor Jessop spots something half seen creeping over the taff rail. Then men in the rigging are attacked, a man disappears, and everyone starts to get scared. Then Jessop sees something below the water following the ship....

Mysterious deaths and disappearances on a doomed ship on its final voyage. Another ship appears out of nowhere, then vanishes. A single survivor of the Mortzestus gives his account of terror and haunting on the high seas in this classic tale by master writer William Hope Hodgson.

The story opens in the 19th century but quickly moves to the far future, where the sun has gone out, leaving the world in a darkness broken only by strange lights and mysterious fires. Over the ages, monsters and evil forces have descended to the Earth, compelling the surviving humans to take refuge in a great pyramid of imperishable metal built in a miles-deep chasm. The monsters surround the pyramid in a perpetual siege lasting for eons, waiting for the moment when its defenses will fail.
