Tokyo resident Keiko Furukara has never fit in - neither in her family, nor in school - but when at the age of 18 she begins working at the Hiiromachi branch of national convenience store chain Smile Mart, she realizes instantly that she has found her purpose in life. Delighted to be able to exist in a place where the rules of social interaction are crystal clear (many are laid out line-by-line in the store's manual), Keiko does her best to copy the dress, mannerisms, and mode of speech of her colleagues, playing the part of a "normal" person excellently, more or less.

As a child, Natsuki doesn’t fit into her family. Her parents favor her sister, and her best friend is a plush toy hedgehog named Piyyut who has explained to her that he has come from the planet Popinpobopia on a special quest to help her save the Earth.

Keiko Furukura is thirty-six, and she has been happily working at a Tokyo “Smile Mart” for eighteen years, fitting in by copying her colleagues’ dress and mannerisms, playing the part of a “normal person” excellently—more or less. But her packaged idyll is threatened by mounting pressure to find a husband and a proper career, prompting her to take desperate action to protect her peaceful world.

Depuis l'enfance, Keiko Furukura a toujours été en décalage par rapport à ses camarades. À trente-six ans, elle occupe un emploi de vendeuse dans un konbini, sorte de supérette japonaise ouverte 24h/24. En poste depuis dix-huit ans, elle n'a aucune intention de quitter sa petite boutique, au grand dam de son entourage qui s'inquiète de la voir toujours célibataire et précaire à un âge où ses amies de fac ont déjà toutes fondé une famille. En manque de main-d'œuvre, la supérette embauche un nouvel employé, Shiraha, trente-cinq ans, lui aussi célibataire.

Natsuki n'est pas une petite fille comme les autres. Son meilleur ami est un hérisson en peluche qui la somme de sauver les Terriens, et elle passe tous ses étés à la montagne avec son cousin Yû, espérant qu'un vaisseau spatial la ramène d'où elle vient vraiment. Quand un événement menace de séparer les cousins pour toujours, ils se font une promesse : survivre, quoi qu'il arrive. Des années plus tard, Natsuki est mariée et semble mener une vie normale. Mais les ombres de son enfance refont surface et la jeune femme se réfugie chez Yû.
