This is a story about REAL WITCHES. Real witches dress in ordinary clothes, have ordinary jobs and look very much like ordinary people. But they are far from ORDINARY. The Grand High Witch, leader of all the witches, has a plan to make each and every child disappear. That is, unless one boy and his grandmother can stop her.

When two bold adventurers climb over the wall to explore the overgrown garden next door, they discover a ship made of bushes, with tall, thin trees for masts. They also meet marvellous Mrs Tredegar, who turns them into a fully trained crew, and with their imaginations at ready, they embark on a series of glorious voyages.

While walking along the beach one day, Isobel and Nicholas discover a strange-looking wreck. As they begin to put it together, they find it is a peculiar sort of sailing boat. They clamber in and so begins their great adventure. There he meets the Minpins, tiny tree-dwelling people whose children are the size of matchsticks. They live in fear of the terrible, galloping Gruncher.
