Narrator Dan Stevens ( Downton Abbey) presents an uncanny performance of Mary Shelley's timeless gothic novel, an epic battle between man and monster at its greatest literary pitch. In trying to create life, the young student Victor Frankenstein unleashes forces beyond his control, setting into motion a long and tragic chain of events that brings Victor to the very brink of madness. How he tries to destroy his creation, as it destroys everything Victor loves, is a powerful story of love, friendship, scientific hubris, and horror.

Frankenstein tells the haunting story of Victor Frankenstein, a young scientist who creates life through forbidden experimentation—only to recoil from the being he brings into the world. As his creation seeks understanding, companionship, and purpose, Victor is forced to confront the devastating consequences of unchecked ambition. A powerful blend of gothic horror and philosophical inquiry, Frankenstein explores responsibility, isolation, humanity, and the dangers of playing god.

Frankenstein—or, The Modern Prometheus—is considered to be one of the earliest examples of science fiction. Written by Mary Shelley, it tells the story of scientist Victor Frankenstein and the catastrophic consequences of his attempts to create a perfect new being by activating a group of body parts with an electrical charge. The hideous monster that is born of Frankenstein's experiment wreaks havoc when it realises that it will never know the happiness that mere mortals can enjoy.

Although the story of Frankenstein is well known and commonly referenced, experiencing the original novel is well worth the endeavor and illuminates the true depth and complexity that is often missed in modern references. A tale not just of monsters and dark shadows, but of hubris, romance...

In 1816, when eighteen-year old Mary Godwin began writing Frankenstein, the idea that a woman could dream up such a tale was as far-fetched as raising a being from the dead. But Mary wasn't just any woman. The daughter of two notorious radicals, Mary had become an outcast from English society when she was only sixteen. A lifelong advocate for the rights of women, she refused to be governed by social conventions, running away with a married man, having children out of wedlock, and authoring books, stories, and essays that broke literary conventions.

Newly updated to feature award-winning narrator, Christopher Tester! Frankenstein is one of the earliest examples of science fiction, introducing the prototypical “mad scientist” who creates a monster who destroys everyone and everything that is dear to him. The scientist is the eponymous character of the novel but the name, Frankenstein, has become popularly attached to the creature itself, who has become one of the best-known monsters in the history of motion pictures and a constant reference point in popular culture.

The 1815 eruption of Indonesia’s Tambora volcano had a catastrophic effect on climate around the world. In North America and Europe, the following 12 months became known as “the year without summer”. Confined indoors by the relentless rain and cold, a group of friends, including 18-year-old Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley and poet Lord Byron, began writing ghost stories to pass the time. Shelley’s tale Frankenstein remains, more than 200 years later, a work of timeless imagination and power.
