The Little Mermaid, as adapted by Hans Christian Andersen, is a long tale with a complex plot which was first published in 1836. It tells the story of a young mermaid who ascends to the surface on her 15th birthday, as is the custom. She happens upon a ship in the throes of a storm, and saves the life of a prince who was about to drown. She falls in love with him, vows to find him again and to love him forever. There are, however, different rules and fates that separate mermaids from people, and the little mermaid undergoes many trials because of the choice she made.

Far out at sea, where the water is the bluest of blue, lived a Little Mermaid with her five sisters in an enchanting underwater city surrounded by beautiful flowers and exotic fish of all kinds. Fascinated by stories of the world beyond where the animals and humans dwell, they eagerly awaited their turn to the surface. So, as decree allowed, the Little Mermaid was permitted to rise out of the sea to sit on the rocks in the moonlight on her 16th birthday. In this strange new world, she saves a charming prince from certain death and falls in love.

The Princess and the Pea is the story of a prince who wishes to marry a princess but is having difficulty finding a suitable wife. One night a young woman who claims to be a princess arrives at the palace, so the prince's mother decides to test their unexpected guest by placing a pea under her bed, covered by 20 feather mattresses. In the morning, the guest tells her hosts that she had a sleepless night, kept awake by something hard in the bed. So the two are married because only a real princess would be sensitive enough to feel a pea through so much bedding.

A beautiful princess lives in a magnificent kingdom deep, deep below the sea. Have you ever heard the story of the old Street Lamp? It's really not very amusing, but you might listen to it for once. - It was such an honest lamp, which had done its duty for many, many years and which was now going to be discarded. It was the last evening it hung on its post and gave light to the street beneath it. The Lamp felt like an old ballet dancer who is performing for the last time and who knows that tomorrow she will be in a cold garret.

Now I'm going to tell you a story that I heard when I was a little fellow and that I like better and better the more I think of it. For it's the same with stories as with many people; the older they grow, the nicer they grow, and that is delightful.

There were so many toys in the nursery. On the top of the cabinet stood the penny bank, made of clay in the shape of a little pig. Of course, he had a slit in his back, which had been enlarged with a knife so that silver dollars also could be put in; and two such dollars had been slipped into the box, along with a great number of pennies. The Money Pig was stuffed so full he could no longer rattle, which is the highest honor a Money Pig can attain. There he stood, high up on the shelf, looking down on everything else in the room.

In the German country of Württemberg, where the beautiful acacia trees bloom beside the highways, and the apple and pear trees bend down in autumn under the weight of their ripe blessings, there lies the little town of Marbach. It belongs to the class of quite unimportant towns, but it is located in a beautiful spot near the Neckar, the river that flows swiftly past towns and green vineyards and old knights' castles, to join its waters with those of the proud Rhine.

Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Swineherd” tells the story of a Prince who, rejected by an arrogant Princess who disdains his genuine gifts of a rose and nightingale, disguises himself as a swineherd. The Princess is then lured by the Swineherd’s clever, but ultimately superficial, trinkets, trading kisses for a magical pot and a musical rattle. When the Emperor discovers his daughter’s scandalous behavior, he banishes them both, only for the Prince to reveal his true identity and denounce her for valuing triviality over true worth and rejecting his genuine love.
