In this sharp and quietly humorous tale from Hans Christian Andersen, two very different cocks stand as symbols of pride, purpose, and perception. One struts loudly in the farmyard, admired by hens and convinced of his own greatness. The other sits high above on the rooftop—a weather-cock—silent, distant, and certain of his superiority. When a storm shakes the world around them, each remains exactly what he is.

A duck arrived from Portugal. Some people said she came from Spain, but that doesn't really matter. She was called the Portuguese; she laid eggs, and was killed and dressed and cooked; that's the story of her life. But all the ducklings that were hatched from her eggs were also called Portuguese, and there's some distinction in that. At last there was only one left of her whole family in the duck yard - a yard to which the hens also had access, and where the cock strutted about with endless arrogance.

By the great lake behind the wood there stood an old mansion. Round about it circled a deep ditch, with bulrushes, reeds, and grasses growing in it. Close by the bridge, near the entrance gate, an old willow tree bent over the reeds.

In a poet's study, somebody made a remark as he looked at the inkstand that was standing on the table: "It's strange what can come out of that inkstand! I wonder what the next thing will be. Yes, it's strange!"
