Life aboard Independence was proving very interesting for Bryan Norton, human in exile. With his youthful body returned to him via the magic of the Molecular Reconstruction Transformer, or MRT as it is commonly called, he was experiencing a second life. It is a new chance at something far more interesting and challenging than his first time around in life.

Bryan Norton was a loner with a love for shooting, and the vast Arizona desert at his disposal to cater to that passion. A former Marine Captain, he was the beneficiary of an early medical retirement due to a blown knee and now had three hundred and sixty five days of vacation a year, use it or lose it. A chance encounter with a stranger on a desert outing was about to change his life.

By the middle of the twenty-first century, the major powers on Earth had fallen into a second Cold War centralized in cyberspace. The US has made considerable strides in artificial intelligence by introducing the first ALICE system to the world. In an effort to catch up, China and Russia pooled their total AI resources, hoping their combined technologies would meet or exceed the American systems.

Bryan Norton's adventure continues as an attempt on his life prompts the crew of Independence to search the universe for a hidden adversary, one intent on their destruction. An unexpected appearance leaves Bryan at odds with his female companions as a new alien female captures his attention, and the crew adds to their ranks due to a fortuitous alteration in the Galactic definition of what it means to be human.
