Situada en los comienzos de la Revolución Francesa, la historia transcurre entre dos ciudades, Londres y París. La joven Lucía Manette junto al senior Lorry, rescata a su padre a quien creía muerto y lo lleva a vivir a Inglaterra. El senior Manette había estado dieciocho años recluido y olvidado en un calabozo de la prisión de la Bastilla. Cinco años después, Charles Darnay, acusado de ser un espía de Francia, contrae matrimonio con Lucía y tienen una hija. Mientras en Londres todo continua igual, en París la situación está cada vez más conmocionada. En este contexto es que Darnay decide marchar rumbo a Francia dado que una persona está presa y va a ser condenada a pena de muerte por su culpa.

Originally published in the 1852 Christmas edition of Dickens' journal Household Words, "The Poor Relation's Story" takes place during a Christmas feast where a poor relation of the host tells the story of his life.
