Urania Cottage was a charitable home established in the late 1840s by Charles Dickens and the philanthropist Angela Burdett-Coutts. Located in Shepherd’s Bush, west London, it was created to provide a fresh start for women who had been involved in prostitution or petty crime. Dickens, deeply concerned with social reform, personally helped to design and manage the program, reviewing applications, writing admission rules, and keeping detailed reports on the women’s progress.

Left unfinished after Dickens died in 1870, The Mystery of Edwin Drood centers on Edwin Drood's uncle, John Jasper, and his love for Rosa Bud, Edwin's fiancee. Set in the dark, fictional cathedral city of Cloisterham, the novel is awash with guilt, disguise and mystery. In 1842, Charles Dickens visited America. His reception was somewhat colder than that which usually greeted him - already a successful author in both Britain and the United States. This lack of enthusiasm from the Americans was partly due to his criticism of the pirating of English books in that country and partly due to his outspoken distaste for the custom of slavery in the southern states.
