Newbery Medal winner Carol Ryrie Brink uses vignettes of people she knew during her childhood in Idaho to give a glimpse of everyday life in the early 20th century and to provide insight into her own tragic early years.

Selected in 2005 by the army to be the first airborne reconnaissance squadron, 5th Squadron, 73rd Cavalry Regiment, better known as 5-73 CAV, was formed from 3rd Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment. The members of the squadron were hand-selected by the squadron command team, Lieutenant Colonel Poppas and Command Sergeant Major Edgar. With just more than 400 paratroopers, they were half the size of a full-strength battalion and the smallest unit in the Panther Brigade.

"Big-Foot Wallace” is better known throughout Texas as an Indian-fighter, hunter, and ranger, than any one, perhaps, now living in the State; which is saying a good deal when the great number who have acquired more or less notoriety in that way is taken into consideration. Few men now living, I am confident, have witnessed as many stirring incidents, had more “hair-breadth escapes,” or gone through more of the hardships and perils of a border life.
