The Gospel of Nicodemus is an important work of New Testament apocryphal literature, traditionally associated with the Acts of Pilate. The text expands upon the trial, crucifixion, death, and resurrection of Jesus, giving special attention to Pilate, Jewish authorities, witnesses to Christ's innocence, and the events surrounding the Passion. It also contains the famous account of Christ's descent into Hades, where the powers of death are confronted and the righteous dead are delivered.

In 1604, King James I of England authorized that a new translation of the Bible into English be started. It was finished in 1611, just 85 years after the first translation of the New Testament into English appeared (Tyndale, 1526). The Authorized Version, or the King James Version, quickly became the standard for English-speaking Protestants. Its flowing language and prose rhythm have had a profound influence on the literature of the past 400 years.
